Rovio Entertainment, the maker of Angry Birds, is betting that their game is big enough to turn into a feature film. They have officially announced an Angry Birds movie and have already brought on Sony Pictures to cast, hire and direct the production.
Angry Birds, which was first launched in 2009, has become a worldwide sensation. The mobile game features cute cartoon graphics and the objective is to throw angry-looking birds at building structures and pigs. The mechanics are like drawing back a slingshot, using your finger to control the angle and power to launch your little bird missiles. The mobile app is arguably the first phone game that achieved global popularity and recognition, paving the way for future mobile app developers to attempt for the same success. Rovio has since released new worlds and new seasons based on the original Angry Birds game. There’s also a ridiculous amount of Angry Birds merchandise available for loyal fans, from stuffed animals to slippers and even this Angry Birds-Star Wars crossover lego set. Apparently, the next logical step was to make a movie.
Rovio’s CEO, Mikael Hed explained, “It was very important for Rovio to find the perfect partner – in style, talent and location – to bring the Angry Birds movie to life, and Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver made that decision easy.” The anticipated launch date is July 1, 2016. This will be the first mobile app that’s ever been made into a movie (to our knowledge)! What would the plot even be about?!
