February 19, 2014 – Facebook has announced a deal to purchase WhatsApp, the popular mobile messaging app, for a staggering $16 billion in cash and stock. This will be Facebook’s largest acquisition to date and makes the $8.5bn that Microsoft paid for Skype look like a bargain in comparison.

Mark Zuckerberg comments on the acquisition, “WhatsApp is on a path to connect one billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable. I’ve known Jan for a long time and I’m excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected.”

WhatsApp is a messaging app with incredibly high engagement – more than 70% of its 450 million monthly users are active daily. This acquisition will help Facebook grab a strong foothold in the mobile messaging space. Once acquired, Facebook intends to allow WhatsApp to run mostly independently, similar to an older acquisition, Instagram. WhatsApp’s CEO and Founder Jan Koum will join Facebook’s Board of Directors.

Rovio Entertainment, the maker of Angry Birds, is betting that their game is big enough to turn into a feature film. They have officially announced an Angry Birds movie and have already brought on Sony Pictures to cast, hire and direct the production.

Angry Birds, which was first launched in 2009, has become a worldwide sensation. The mobile game features cute cartoon graphics and the objective is to throw angry-looking birds at building structures and pigs. The mechanics are like drawing back a slingshot, using your finger to control the angle and power to launch your little bird missiles. The mobile app is arguably the first phone game that achieved global popularity and recognition, paving the way for future mobile app developers to attempt for the same success. Rovio has since released new worlds and new seasons based on the original Angry Birds game. There’s also a ridiculous amount of Angry Birds merchandise available for loyal fans, from stuffed animals to slippers and even this Angry Birds-Star Wars crossover lego set. Apparently, the next logical step was to make a movie.

Rovio’s CEO, Mikael Hed explained, “It was very important for Rovio to find the perfect partner – in style, talent and location – to bring the Angry Birds movie to life, and Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver made that decision easy.” The anticipated launch date is July 1, 2016. This will be the first mobile app that’s ever been made into a movie (to our knowledge)! What would the plot even be about?!

Have you noticed video game companies are getting better and better at making really freaky horror titles? Whether set in a mental asylum, abandoned mansion, or dark creepy forest, 5 minutes with any of these games is enough to send me running and screaming every time.

Sound like your kind of thing? Perfect – Look no further than this list of the most chilling, disturbing and downright scary games we’ve ever played.

3. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

This game famously set off dozens of Youtube videos recording adult men being reduced to quivering masses within minutes. Amnesia is a horror survival story and played from a total first-person perspective. You play Daniel, a man who awakens in an enormous, dark castle with no memory of how he got there or why. You discover a letter to yourself revealing that you’ve intentionally erased your memory. Clues are placed to help you piece together what has happened at the castle, and what you must do to escape. The whole time you are followed by a shadowy, paranormal creature and must also avoid the monsters that roam the halls. The scariest element by far is that you have no way to fight back. You can only run and hide from your pursuers while you try to maintain your sanity. In Amnesia, if you spend too much time in the dark, Daniel literally goes insane.

You can download and play Amnesia online or from your Steam client.

2. Slender: The Eight Pages

The premise of this minimalist horror game is pretty straightforward. You’re stuck in a forest in the dead of night and your only other company is a paranormal creature named simply, “Slender”. Your goal is to find 8 manuscripts that are located around the forest while avoiding being killed. You are equipped with only a flashlight, which will die if keep it on for too long. You also need to preserve precious energy as jogging or running away tires your character much more rapidly than walking. Take too long and you’ll start hearing the telltale steps and static on your screen that precede a Slender man appearance. Here’s the best part: you can’t hit ESC to pause or quit when Slender approaches or appears. Good luck with that.

You can download Slender online. It’s also completely free! (But even paying me would not be enough).

1. Outlast

In what is undoubtedly the scariest game released on PS4 so far in 2014, in Outlast you play Miles Upshur, a journalist who receives an anonymous tip about a secluded psychiatric asylum located high on a remote mountain. Upon entering the institution, you immediately realize your mistake once you see the dismembered bodies of military and asylum personnel. Your mission is now to escape the building equipped with only a night vision camera (that doubles as your only way of seeing in the dark). You come across some truly disturbing scenes with the asylum’s insane patients and grotesques. In every sequence, you have to decide whether you want to keep your camera, giving you precious awareness of what is happening around you, or to turn it off to preserve your battery and lower the risk of detection. Once again, your character can’t fight back. Your only defense is being able to hide under beds and narrow spaces. Of course, that might not help as some Outlast players have reported the terrifying experience of being dragged out from a hiding place by their ankles.

You can download and play Outlast online or through your Steam client.

To all the brave souls who will be trying these games out, have fun with the screaming, heart palpitations, nightmares and all that nonsense. I’ll be on Hello Kitty Online.

Apparently, archaeologists believe they’ve unearthed some “vampire graves” in Gliwice, Poland. The tombs were discovered in an area of land normally dotted by WWII graves. All of the bodies discovered in the graves were decapitated. The skulls were found on top of the skeleton’s legs.

In medieval times, this ritualized execution and burial method was a common practice to prevent the dead from rising. Vampires were widely believed in and feared in Europe around this time, and it was believed that with the head separated from the body, a vampire could not rise up after death. The graves are hard to date exactly as they were discovered without any clothing, adornments or other possessions.

Vampires were blamed for all kinds of tragedies and ill fortunes, from natural disasters to sudden and unexpected deaths. The belief may also have come about because of strange but natural effects of decomposition on a body. For example, a corpse sealed in a coffin might take much longer to decay. However, internal decomposition can cause bloating that forces blood into the mouth and makes it look like a dead body just gorged on human blood. (Gross!)
