Though 3D printing has been around for over three decades, the technology had never been seen as particularly useful until quite recently.
Only over the past couple of years did 3D printing experience a resurgence of attention, as the latest advancements have proven it to be widely versatile in a number of applications. Now, 3D printers are capable of creating almost anything. Guns, replacement body parts; 3D printers can even print additional 3D printers.
However, as with all technology destined to change the world, changes brought on by 3D printing can be for better or for worse. The latest venture resides somewhat ambiguously on the spectrum: 3D printed tattoos.
Though still in the early stages of development, students at a highly esteemed design school in Paris have released this video showing their 3D printer tattooing an individual with a real needle and ink. Choosing a tattoo is as simple as uploading an image, and the printer’s precision is seemingly perfect.
Is this the future of the tattoo industry, one of perfected body art, free of human error? Or is it simply the further decline of the necessity of humans for skilled tasks? Simply enough, the industry’s future will depend on the preference of the clientele, and whether getting inked is more about the experience or the final result.
